Old Master Double Basses for Sale

For years now we have had a "revolving collection" of the finest double bass in the world. Finding them a good home is an important consideration and getting the price just right to suit both the seller and purchaser. Many top players have got their double bass through Tom and his excellent contacts mean he can often help find a specific instrument.

Instruments in the last year or so have included excellent examples of Hironumous Amati ll, a fine Cremonese bass of the 18th century, a fine Thomas Kennedy, an exceptional Vincenzo Panormo and Hill among others. We also regularly have beautiful examples of old double bass bows available.

    Vincenzo Panormo String Double Bass

We are pleased to offer a fine example of the “Stradivarius of the Double Bass” - Vincenzo Panormo. They are very rare and not often seen on the market. Panormo is thought to be the greatest of them all and this instrument proves the point. Matching several other examples we know, the wood he used for the ribs is not quite as deep as some which makes for great playability while maintaining the same beautiful yet robust outline that so many have copied over the years. Sound is the thing of course, and this bass has plenty. The characteristic Panormo sound - strong, clear but velvety lows with a robust and singing first string. It speaks easily and is fun to play. The scroll is classic with beautiful ornamented plates which appear to be original. We could go on and on! A must see and try.

  • John F. Lott Double Base for sale from Thomas Martin

    Bernardus Calcanius Double Bass

Here is a real gem of an Italian soloist’s instrument. Made by Bernardus Calcanius (Bernardo Calcagni) in about 1750, it has a real quality sound and great playability. Lots of warmth and strength in the low register as well as the highs. It would well suit a Chamber Orchestra, Chamber musician, or soloist. Calcanius was the greatest of the Genoese makers and his violins are highly prised as well as are his lower instruments. John F. Lott Snr 1776-1856 Double Bass

We are very pleased to offer a stunning double bass by the “King of the English bass makers”. A number of authors have said that he “ranks with the finest Italians”. It is absolutely typical of his finest work from his period in Seven Dials, Soho, London about 1840. It bears its original label. All the Lott trademarks are there such as the finely cut scroll in two pieces of pearwood and using the join as the centre line.

Lott began his working life as a chair maker and soon found his way to the London workshop of Thomas Dodd for whom he and his colleague Bernard Fendt Snr made a number of fine basses. Both makers left Dodd in around 1820.

This handsome Mittenwald made bass was made around 1840 by the famous Neuner family. • Gaetano Guadagnini II Double Base for sale from Thomas MArtin

    Gaetano Guadagnini II Double Bass

This instrument is by Gaetano Guadagnini ll made in about 1830. Third in the line of the illustrious Turinese dynasty of great violinmakers. His grandfather was, of course, the illustrious G.B. Guadagnini considered one of the greatest of all time. With an exclusively Italian Dendro report with several matches to other Guadagnini instruments, this leaves no doubt as to the quality of this fine instrument. It appears to have been in the collection of Edward Stansfield, a well-known bassist and collector in Liverpool, which included a number of Italian treasures in the North of England. Gaetano produced instruments of the entire violin family including guitars that are very sought after and used by virtuosi such as John Williams. The condition is excellent and is great to play with a great low register as well as lovely singing highs.
